History of Bedford & County Golf Club
Bedford & County Golf club celebrated 100 years here on this site on Clapham Park - as it was originally called in 2012. Back in 1912 the then farmer of the land, Lancelot Clark, was a keen golfer and it is thanks to him that the course exists.
The club changed hands in 1926 and became Bedford & County Golf Club. Henry Longhurst came to learn his golf here as a 14-year-old boy before going up to Clare College in Cambridge.
During the second world war the area covering holes 6 to 15 was requisitioned by the War Agricultural Committee and Nissen huts were erected for use by the RAF and WAA - hence the 15th hole being named Waafery.
Over the past 70 years the course and facilities have been enhanced with new improved drainage, extending the tees to enable year-round usage, a new clubhouse and outside terrace and raising standards to levels that modern golfing demands. The current members and Board of directors continue to maintain the club's reputation as both a friendly, welcoming golf club and a challenging test of golf.
